Jackie Brenner

President

Jackie Brenner is currently entering her 2nd year in a combined 4-year MD/MPH program at the Miller School of Medicine, demonstrating diverse interests in medical technology distribution, policy development and implementation, and medical education. With a background in working with advanced medical technologies such as Focused Ultrasound and their current fellowship at the NIH in the Department of Interventional Radiology, she possess a strong passion for introducing healthcare technologies to democratize access and enhance clinical outcomes in underserved regions. Through their involvement in a Capstone project at the NASEM, Jackie is actively engaged in examining the working definition for Long COVID, assessing the strength of current reviews, identifying evidence gaps, and utilizing evidence-based approaches to formulate population-based policies. Additionally, she is deeply committed to medical education and science communication, having founded STEM Potential from their TikTok platform in December 2020, with the goal of educating and connecting students in a collaborative environment while fostering mentorship. In high school she founded a noprofit called, Piece of Peace (pieceofpeace.world), that imparts knowledge about nutrition, mindfulness, and yoga to children across the world. Outside of academia and advocacy, Jackie has a range of personal interests including being a competitive squash player, practicing yoga and meditation, cooking, reading the New York Times, and creating engaging educational science videos on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube.

Ashini Panchal

Vice President

Ashini is from Anaheim, California and is a third-year medical student at Sidney Kimmel Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is a part of the 7-year BS/MD program, affiliated with Penn State and Thomas Jefferson University. She has always wanted to be a pediatrician and hopes to specialize in critical care. She is currently working on research aiming to improve the safety and efficiency of patient care during robotic-assisted surgeries by implementing teamwork and workspace interventions through a human factors framework. Outside of STEM, Ashini has been dancing for 15 years and was on Penn State Jadhoom during her undergraduate years.

Lauren is a graduate student at Claremont Graduate University. She is pursuing an MBA as well as an MS in Mathematics. After graduating with her degree in Liberal Arts from St. John's College, she created a nonprofit (Beyond Numbers Interactive Education) which focuses on making complex math and physics more accessible for students. She creates games out of complex math and physics through the nonprofit she has created to help underprivileged and underrepresented students in STEM. Her goal is to make learning more interactive and find new ways of teaching complex concepts.

Olivia is a current student at the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center SHP studying Histotechnology. Once she completes her degree, she plans to pursue a career as a Histopathologist and contribute to research involving cancer therapies. Olivia is passionate about STEM education, in addition to advocating on behalf of science & art programs for children within her city. Outside of STEM, Olivia utilizes her time to mentor local students in a setting focused on artistic expression.

Donovan Dowers

Director of Wellness

Donovan is a third-year MD/MPH student at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, business owner, and gay AF! His career interests include adolescent health, LGBTQ+ health, mental health and wellness, burnout prevention in the medical field, medical leadership and healthcare administration. He also is continually working to expand his math and science tutoring business, ChemCoach LLC! His astrology signs are Virgo sun, Capricorn moon, and Capricorn rising (#earthy!). Outside of school and his business Donovan enjoys taking care of his two cats and two dogs, cooking, eating, working out from home on his Pelotón, charcuterie board creation, thrifting, and audiobooks. 

 
Anna GarrenDirector of Mentorship

Anna Garren

Director of Mentorship

Annie is currently a medical student at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Prior to MCW, she attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she earned a degree in Neurobiology. Annie spent four years as an undergraduate research assistant during which she studied the progression of burn wounds, variation in clinical breast examinations, and the decay of surgical skills following return from military deployment. Amongst other things, she also served as a pre-med peer mentor and volunteered at her local Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, which seeks to encourage innovation through education and community partnership. She is fortunate enough to have the opportunity to continue to act upon her passion for mentorship through various organizations at the Medical College of Wisconsin, while also serving as the Community Service Chair for her student organization. Annie is currently performing research on surgical outcomes and hopes to pursue a career in Trauma Surgery and Critical Care.

 
Dr. Paul Ian CrossDirector of Global Relations

Dr. Paul Ian Cross

Director of Global Relations

Paul Ian Cross is a scientist, researcher, writer and video maker from London, UK. Paul works in clinical research across multiple indications with a focus on early phase research, pharmacovigilance and vaccine trials. Paul’s PhD investigated the benefit-risk assessment of medicines, and how patients and the public can be more involved in their treatment decisions. In 2020, Paul developed learning materials for the clinical research workforce as part of the UK's research response to COVID-19. In addition to his research career, Paul has a passion for introducing children to STEM subjects, particularly reluctant readers. By introducing science creatively, he aims to spark their interest, allowing them to gain confidence with their reading. Paul is also a science communicator and author. His first nonfiction book, How To Vanquish A Virus, was published by Welbeck in 2021. In 2021, Paul was named as a ‘Luminarie’ at the G7’s Vaccine Confidence Summit, in recognition for his science communication work on social media.

Dan Guinto

Director of Discord

Dan is an incoming junior at the University of Michigan, where he will be pursuing his B.S.Chemistry degree and M.S. in Organic Chemistry. Before Michigan, he started out at Lone Star College in Houston, Texas. He served as a teaching assistant for organic chemistry, a STEM peer tutor, and a research assistant in a biochemistry & proteomics lab studying the role of ubiquitin in neurodegenerative diseases. Once Dan finishes his time at Michigan, he plans to obtain his Ph.D. in organic chemistry focusing on total synthesis using metalloenzymes. Dan eventually wants to become a professor to combine his passions for organic synthesis research with mentoring students in chemistry. Outside the lab, he enjoys cooking/baking, cars (especially Tesla), coffee, pets of all varieties (especially corgis), and pokémon. He was also a private speech & debate coach and attendant for clients who identified on the autism spectrum.

Shockey Sanders

Director of Social Media

Shockey Sanders is a neuroscience and psychology double major with a minor in addiction prevention. She attends Syracuse University and is in her junior year of her undergraduate education. She’s currently working in research on multiracial risk factors for alcohol abuse and has published research in cannabidoils on human pain reactivity. She plans to pursue a masters in pharmacology and work in psychiatric drug research.

Noah Thornton

Noah is from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and he just graduated from the University of Mississippi (Hotty Toddy!) with a B.S. in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Society and Health ('21). He will also be starting his M1 year at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University this fall. He has been heavily involved in cancer research, studying cellular metabolic profiles in metastatic breast cancer, as well as working in a cancer hospital over the last 5 years. Noah has a big interest in continuing to analyze ethics in healthcare, from an urban bioethics and end-of-life care perspective. Some of his favorite med-related (ethics and cancer mainly) reads have been Elderhood by Louise Aronson, The Emperor of All Maladies by Siddhartha Mukherjee, Being Mortal by Atul Gawande, and The Soul of Care by Arthur Kleinman. Currently, he works for Altius Test Prep as a certified MCAT Mentor where he has been able to help hundreds of pre-meds on their journey to becoming a physician. *Certified fun-haver

Colette grew up in Potomac, MD and is a senior at Quince Orchard High School. She has been to Co-President of Future Teens of Medicine since July 2020. At FTOM she works to excite teens about careers in medicine. She has also been a teacher with Kindling Curiosity, a company that works to create free, online classes for elementary school students, since March 2020. Outside of STEM, Colette has been training in ballet since she was 3 years old and enjoys spending her free time dancing.

Valerie is a senior in high school hoping to pursue a career in medicine and public health. Growing up in rural Russia and later urban NYC, Valerie hopes to empower health in underserved communities. In addition to her STEM involvement and community volunteering, she’s a figure skater and (recreational) writer.

Saana is a senior at Skidmore College double majoring in neuroscience and music. She is passionate about sharing her love of science with others and enjoys creating funny science videos (@sciencebysaana on Tiktok and Instagram). In the future, Saana plans to pursue a PhD in neuroscience. Outside of STEM, she enjoys playing violin, figure skating, hiking, and traveling.

Andrew is currently a junior at Lewis University, majoring in Biology, and he is hoping to head to medical school in the coming years. He is also apart of a research team at Lewis where he studies hydrogels and their potential applications in biological systems. He loves science education and spreading the love of science.

Emilee is from Western New York, graduating from SUNY Fredonia with a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Genetics and minors in Chemistry and English. Currently, she is a post-baccalaureate research fellow at the National Institutes of Health. Emilee is applying to medical school, and plans on eventually becoming an Emergency Medicine physician. Throughout her career, she plans on continually incorporating the medical humanities, intersectionality and diversity to work towards a more inclusive future in STEM.

 
Joshua Steif

Joshua Steif

Josh is currently an undergraduate student studying at Rutgers - New Brunswick. He is planning to apply to medical school, and hopes to pursue a career in an emergency and neurological field of medicine. He is a first responder for a volunteer ambulance service. In high school he was also the vice president of his high school's Pre-Med Society. During his free time he also likes to play hockey and works at an ice rink.

Dr. Andrew Gotlin, M.D.

Dr. Andrew Gotlin, M.D.

Dr. Andrew Gotlin is a retired primary care physician who practiced internal medicine for over 25 years in a variety of practice settings. After receiving his undergraduate degree at Columbia University, he completed his medical degree and internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center. He has worked as an Attending Physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center, as the Medical Director of the Ryan/Chelsea-Clinton Community Health Center in New York, and as the director of primary care development at Lenox Hill Hospital. His most recent position was with Yale University as the Chief of Student Health and Athletic Medicine, while maintaining a clinical appointment at the Yale School of Medicine. In addition to providing direct primary care, he has enjoyed leadership roles in medical administration, medical education and medical mentorship. Dr. Gotlin currently lives in Connecticut with his husband Neal and their canine daughter Molly. He enjoys volunteering at a local animal shelter, traveling the world and learning new languages.

 
Dr. Phillip N. Williams, M.D.

Dr. Phillip N. Williams, M.D.

Dr. Phillip Williams is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon who specializes in Sports Medicine with a focus on innovative arthroscopic and reconstructive interventions for injuries affecting individuals of all ages. Ultimately, his goal is to get patients back to doing what they love, whether it is returning to the football field or chasing grandchildren around the park.

Throughout his life, Dr. Williams has always sought to become a leader in his field and has attended some of the top institutions for his education and training. As an undergraduate at Yale University, Dr. Williams studied political science and earned All-Ivy honors as a member of the varsity track and field team. Afterwards, he honed his research skills by working in a laboratory at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He then attended Harvard Medical School and completed orthopedic surgery residency at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery, which U.S. News and World report consistently ranks as the #1 orthopedic surgery hospital in the nation.

For additional specialized training in sports medicine, he completed a fellowship at the renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic. During his training he has had the opportunity to assist in the care of several professional sports teams including the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Sparks, and Los Angeles Galaxy. Additionally, he was assistant team physician for Loyola Marymount University Athletics as well as numerous high school football teams. He has written numerous scientific articles and book chapters on various sports medicine conditions and his award-winning research has been presented throughout the country and internationally. Dr. Williams utilizes the most up to date evidence-based surgical and non-surgical techniques to implement a comprehensive individual treatment plan for each patient emphasizing prevention of further injuries.

Dr. Williams is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the J. Robert Gladden Orthopedic Society, and the National Medical Association.

In his free time, Dr. Williams enjoys spending time with his three young daughters Laila, Elise, and Aria, running with his wife Andrea, and listening to and collecting jazz records.
